PMA ‘09 Day 1 Report

imgp8988

Day one of PMA is in the books and as promised here is my first round of interesting product picks with comments. I will have more to report as the show continues and hopefully some additional in-depth reviews of a few of these items. Let’s dive in: More »

PMA bound

Tomorrow evening I fly out to Vegas for 3 days at the Photo Marketing Association’s (PMA) 2009 trade show. I’m all geared up with my Pentax K10D, new SanDisk 8GB Extreme III SDHC card and ExpressCard reader, custom printed business cards, and press badge. Unfortunately, my extra battery and battery grip look like they won’t get here in time. Shame.

I’m sure there will be plenty of coverage for the big name products. Rather than just add to the noise, my plan is to blog about the products I find most interesting. Hopefully this will add a slightly different perspective to the show coverage than the typical mainstream media coverage. Of course I’ll probably get caught up in any big announcements just like everyone else but I’ll do my best to find a unique angle to cover. Check back often for updates throughout the week.

BTW, thanks to the snow today for providing nice flat whitespace studio-like lighting for this shot:

We got a rare 3″ of snow today. It is the wet sticky kind that packs quite well then melts down the back of your shirt ;-) It was blowing quite heavily but the K10D held up fine with its weather sealing:

Antique door bell guts. Shot at my niece’s birthday party in Wetumpka, AL. Great old house with awesome light and lots of color. More to come…

Lots of rain here tonight. Good thing my Pentax K10D is weather sealed ;-) Nice video to set the mood: Rain Song

UPDATE: Apparently this photo was just the beginning. This morning the Auburn area was hit by a series of tornadoes. Fortunately, we escaped without damage as two tornadoes passed just to the north and south of us. There was some damage to houses and businesses but so far we are hearing that there have been no injuries. There was lots of lighting and wind and a crazy amount of rain. Our entire back patio and yard was flooded and the alley turned into a white water river. I took a second to venture out of our bathroom closet to take this picture during the height of the storm:

Here’s the view out front. What the heck are these folks thinking?

Now they are forcasting snow tonight after this front moves through. Got to love Alabama weather!

About

I'm an industrial designer and an avid hobbyist photographer. People are always asking me "how'd you do that?" So, I decided to create this site as a place to share my experiences and insights about photography, the gear and what it all means to me. I'm not sure if this site will make anyone besides myself a better photographer but I figure it's worth a try. Take a look around and let me know what you think. Thanks for stopping by!
