<p style="text-align: left;">This time shot with <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/booleansplit/2833756694/in/set-72157603582162922/" target="_blank">my old manual 50mm</a> and heavily cropped to get the macro effect. Processing was limited to some WB and saturation/vibrance tweaking and the addition of some vignetting. This crop is basically a 100% magnifcation of the original 10MP image. Note the slight purple fringing around the droplet from shooting wide open? That&#8217;s how you know this image is <em>real</em> ;-)</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">Continuing to test the <a href="http://www.pentaximaging.com/camera-lenses/smc_PENTAX_DA_35mm_F2.8_Macro_Limited/" target="_blank">35mm f/2.8 Macro Limited</a> this weekend. Shots like this are clearly where this lens shines. This image was cropped slightly in Lightroom before I applied the Direct Positive creative preset. I then tweaked the white balance to give it more of a warm and sunny feel. Finally, since the background was a bit flat, I added in the vignetting to &#8220;frame&#8221; the subject.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">One thing I&#8217;m learning about this lens is that if you go walking around with this lens you&#8217;re going to end up with a wet knee:</p>

<p>After shooting digital for 10 years I finally started shooting <a href="http://www.booleansplit.com/?p=302" target="_self">RAW</a> exclusively in September 2008. What took me so long? Probably the same thing that keeps most amateur photographers from shooting RAW: <em>the added time and complexity of post-processing RAW images</em>. That all changed when I discovered <a href="http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshoplightroom/" target="_blank">Adobe Photoshop Lightroom&#8217;s</a> customizable default development settings. By creating a custom set of image adjustments I get Lightroom to do most of the work for me as I import my images. I often refer to my &#8220;default import settings&#8221; in my blog posts so I figured I should share what those settings are. Here are the settings that I have found that work best for me and my <a href="http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/pentaxk10d/" target="_blank">Pentax K10D</a> in Lightroom v1.4 and make shooting RAW work so well for me:<span id="more-637"></span>In order to create a set of custom develop settings you should start with Adobe&#8217;s default settings. To do so, select an image, enter the Develop Module and simply click on &#8220;Develop&#8221; in the menu bar then select &#8220;Set Default Settings&#8230;&#8221;</p>

<p>When the dialog box appears select &#8220;Restore Adobe Default Settings.&#8221; You will need to do this for each camera you use with Lightroom. To do so, simply find images shot with each camera and repeat this process (use the Metadata Browser in Library mode to find images shot with specific cameras). Obviously, don&#8217;t do this if you have previously saved custom develop settings you want to keep :-/</p>

<p>Once you have established a baseline for your develop settings it&#8217;s time to apply the adjustments you wish to make to <em>ALL</em> future images you import into Lightroom. I emphasized &#8220;all&#8221; because these settings should only serve as the basic image parameters you start with. Keep in mind that RAW files imported into LR do not retain any of the custom image settings that you apply in-camera (ie: sharpness, saturation, contrast, etc.). To automatically apply in-camera settings to your RAW files at import I&#8217;m pretty sure you have to use your camera manufacturer&#8217;s proprietary RAW software. Personally, I&#8217;d rather not be futzing with in-camera image parameter settings while I&#8217;m shooting and instead focus my time and attention on focus, composition and exposure. By creating this baseline default development setting you&#8217;ll only have to spend time adjusting white balance and <a href="http://www.booleansplit.com/?p=286" target="_self">applying creative effects</a>.</p>

<p>The first area to adjust are the Basic settings. Be sure to leave the white balance (WB) default set to &#8220;As Shot.&#8221; Otherwise, LR will override your in-camera &#8220;auto&#8221; setting to whatever you select here (you <em>are</em> shooting in auto WB, right?). Once you have imported images <a href="http://www.booleansplit.com/?p=609" target="_self">adjusting white balance</a> shot-to-shot will be one of the few things you will <em>have</em> to do. Of course the WB eyedropper makes this quick and easy and you can efficiently copy and paste settings to entire batches of photos shot in the same light. Sure beats having an entire batch of JPEGs shot at the wrong setting ;-)</p>
<p>Next, I like to dial in a bit of Clarity. I can&#8217;t really say what Clarity does but it seems to help define edges and <a href="http://bighugelabs.com/flickr/onblack.php?id=3370895739&amp;size=large" target="_blank">brings out subtle details</a> and gives images more depth. Too much Clarity can create distracting dark halos around edges much in the same way an <a href="http://bighugelabs.com/flickr/onblack.php?id=2955354764&amp;size=large" target="_blank">over-processed HDR</a> image does.</p>
<p>I also like to bump the Vibrance slider up a tad to make the color pop a bit more. I prefer using the Vibrance slider over the Saturation slider as Vibrance seems to be more subtle and does not blow out highlights as bad as Saturation does. This is a highly personal setting as many people prefer more neutral (say: &#8220;flat&#8221;) color. For me, I like my colors to <a href="http://www.booleansplit.com/?p=630" target="_self">pop</a>. +25 is my <em>baseline</em> setting. I often go much higher :D</p>

<p>The only thing I do with the Tone Curve adjustment pane is to set the Point Curve to &#8220;Medium Contrast.&#8221; This seems to give the best overall balance to my images. Any other adjustments I make here are done on a case-by-case basis.</p>

<p>No <em>default</em> changes here. I only use the HSL / Color / Grayscale sliders to tweak specific areas of specific images (mostly to make a <a href="http://www.booleansplit.com/?p=576" target="_self">specific color pop</a> or to <a href="http://www.booleansplit.com/?p=127" target="_self">tone map grayscale images</a>).</p>

<p>Again, no default changes here. Thus far in my Lightroom usage the only thing I use Split Toning for is to <a href="http://bighugelabs.com/flickr/onblack.php?id=3082463889&amp;size=large" target="_blank">warm up the occasional B&amp;W image</a>.</p>

<p>I do make a few changes to the Detail settings. I generally like my images to be <a href="http://www.booleansplit.com/?p=605" target="_self"><em>sharp</em></a>. However, I hate the look of &#8220;sharpened&#8221; images. I have found that dialing in a moderate amount of Sharpening at a relatively small radius gives the right look. A handful of Detail does just what you&#8217;d expect- pops detail- without over sharpening the overall image.</p>

<p>In my experience, <em>all</em> lenses impart some kind of CAs to images. Unfortunately, they don&#8217;t all do it in <a href="http://www.booleansplit.com/?p=344" target="_self">the <em>same way</em> at <em>all times</em></a>. The only <em>default</em> setting I have found that works well is setting the Defringe to All Edges. I like to use the Lens Corrections pane to <em>add</em> vignetting to some of my images <a href="http://www.booleansplit.com/?p=632" target="_self">for creative effect</a>. However, I don&#8217;t always do this so I leave the Vignetting settings alone for my default settings.</p>

<p>I don&#8217;t know much about what is going on here. Logic would dictate that the specific camera model setting (Pentax 1.00 in my case) would be the way to go. However, my images are all jacked up if I use anything other than ACR 4.4. I&#8217;m sure that there&#8217;s some pretty useful fine tuning that can be done here but I just keep it on ACR 4.4 and close this pane so I&#8217;m not tempted to mess with it ;-)</p>
<p>Now, simply go back to &#8220;Develop&#8221;&#8211;&gt;&#8221;Set Default Settings&#8230;&#8221; and this time select&#8221;Update to Current Settings.&#8221;</p>

<p>Now the next time you import a batch of RAW images Lightroom will apply your custom develop settings as the default baseline. This will keep you from having to hit <em>every</em> adjustment pane for <em>every</em> image- freeing you up to focus more on composition and creativity while still giving you the most control possible over your images!</p>

<p class="irregualrHeader">My friend <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/stephenwoolverton/" target="_blank">Stephen</a> loaned me his Pentax <a title="B&amp;H Photo product page" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/485180-USA/Pentax_21650_SMCP_DA_16_50mm_f_2_8_ED.html" target="_blank">SMCP-DA* 16-50mm f/2.8 ED AL (IF) SDM</a> lens so I could put it through its paces and compare it to my kit lens (<a title="B&amp;H Photo product page" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/351693-REG/Pentax_21547_SMCP_DA_18_55mm_f_3_5_5_6_AL.html" target="_blank">SMCP-DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL</a>). If you don&#8217;t know already, Pentax&#8217;s DA* (&#8221;D-A-star&#8221;) line of lenses are their highest quality zooms. They feature very high quality construction, weather sealing, silent ultrasonic focus motors (SDM), and Pentax&#8217;s best SMC coatings (SP) to date. Retailing at close to $700 this lens seems like it should be a huge step up from the $99 kit lens.</p>
<p class="irregualrHeader">This isn&#8217;t a technical review. If you want MTF and distortion charts go <a title="photozone.de review" href="http://www.photozone.de/pentax/405-pentax_1650_28" target="_blank">here</a>. Instead, I&#8217;m just going to cover my observations during real world everyday use. Keep in mind that I do have a unique perspective here so take my opinions with an appropriate grain of salt. Here are my overall findings. Feel free to read on for a more in-depth look at how I formulated my opinions.</p>

<p class="irregualrHeader"><strong>CONCLUSION:</strong></p>
<p class="irregualrHeader" style="padding-left: 30px;">While I would normally suggest upgrading the standard kit lenses from Canikon, Pentax has done an excellent job with their <a title="B&amp;H Photo product page" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/351693-REG/Pentax_21547_SMCP_DA_18_55mm_f_3_5_5_6_AL.html" target="_blank">SMCP-DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL</a> and this gussied up DA* lens only helps to prove that point. Had I bought this lens myself I would have sent it back after the first day and put my money to better use. This is a big, heavy and expensive lens that does not prove a significant upgrade to the kit lens in everyday use. Get and/or keep the kit lens and put your money towards a dedicated ultra-wide angle lens and/or some fast primes to <em>compliment</em> the kit lens <em>(some suggestions can be found at the end of this article).</em></p>
<p class="irregualrHeader"><strong>REVIEW:</strong></p>

<p class="irregualrHeader">Purchasing a lens for me encompasses four primary areas of concern: image quality, build quality, handling, and value. There is no standard order of importance here as all of these issues carry different weight depending on the intended application of the lens in question. In this case, the 16-50 seems ideally positioned as an upgrade to the standard kit lens. This makes it an all purpose lens that should perform equally well in all four areas while handily outperforming the kit lens (which is why I am comparing the two here).</p>
<p class="irregualrHeader"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-347" title="100% edge crop" src="http://booleansplit.com/wp-content/uploads/imgp7996.jpg" alt="100% edge crop" width="640" height="428" /></p>
<p class="irregualrHeader"><strong>Image Quality</strong></p>
<p class="irregualrHeader">I think the crop above says it all. Shoot this lens at 16mm with anything less than f/4 and the color fringing (chromatic aberrations or &#8220;CAs&#8221;) and edge softness are quite disappointing. F/8 is required to eliminate the problem altogether from wide shots. The fringing persists all the way up to 50mm but is generally less of a problem at the longer focal lengths due to the shorter depth of field at f/2.8 (CAs get lost in the <a title="Wikipedia definition" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bokeh" target="_blank">bokeh</a>). Center sharpness is pretty good wide open (f/2.8) at all focal lengths and becomes tack sharp at f/4 and above. Overall color and contrast are very good (as it is with all Pentax lenses).</p>
<p class="irregualrHeader">My biggest issue here is that the three main advantages this lens <em>should</em> have over the kit lens are sharpness, speed and the wider field of view (FoV). I found myself stopping down to at least f/4 for most of my shots with this lens, only using f/2.8 in extremely low light hand-held situations and when controlling the depth of field (DoF) was critical. The extra 2mm on the wide end (16mm vs. 18mm in the kit lens) are noticeable due to the greater FoV but more notably for the exaggerated barrel distortion. This isn&#8217;t a deal breaker for me but is disappointing at this price point.</p>
<p class="irregualrHeader"><img class="alignnone" title="Birmingham Blue Hour" src="http://booleansplit.com/wp-content/uploads/imgp8219.jpg" alt="" width="640" height="428" /></p>
<p class="irregualrHeader">On the other hand, stopped all the way down to f/22 and opened up wide to 16mm, this lens produces some very nice results for landscape photography. Its nine bladed aperture creates awesome 18 pointed starbursts with very little flare. This is one of the areas where the higher build quality of the DA* really shines (pun intended).</p>
<p class="irregualrHeader"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-351" title="f/8 @ 16mm" src="http://booleansplit.com/wp-content/uploads/imgp8009.jpg" alt="f/8 @ 16mm" width="640" height="428" /></p>
<p class="irregualrHeader">That 9 bladed aperture also produces very nice bokeh even when stopped down. The image above was taken at 16mm and f/8 and exhibits very smooth blurring of the background with mostly circular out of focus highlights. This shot also illustrates the 16-50&#8217;s macro performance. It&#8217;s 0.3m (11.8&#8243;) minimum focus distance makes it pretty useful for getting in tight even if the 50mm maximum focal length doesn&#8217;t provide a tremendous amount of magnification. Keep in mind that the minimum focus distance of a lens is measured from the sensor (ie: film) plane in the camera body and not from the front of the lens. This means that at 50mm you can get up to about 3-4&#8243; away from the subject with the front glass. This may be useful sometimes and a problem at others. Personally, I like shots like this where you get in close with the wide angle to exaggerate scale and perspective. Meanwhile, the kit lens can focus down to 0.25M (9.8&#8243;)&#8230;</p>
<p class="irregualrHeader"><strong>Build Quality</strong></p>
<p class="irregualrHeader">Not much to say here. This lens is built as well or better than the best lenses from any mainstream manufacturer. One heft and you will not question its price tag. Typical to the DA* line, the 16-50 features gasketed seals to prevent dust and moisture penetration, including a seal at the lens mount to seal it to the camera body. Combined with Pentax&#8217;s weather sealing on the K10/20D bodies this makes for a very practical all-weather combination. I&#8217;m sure this is a useful upgrade but I have shot in some pretty nasty conditions with my kit lens and have not had any problems with moisture penetration. (I have to wonder if most non-professional photographers would put their cameras through the kind of abuse this level of construction suggets is possible). The zoom and focus rings are well damped and buttery smooth with nicely ribbed rubber rings. There is no slop or wiggle between the various moving parts anywhere throughout the zoom range.</p>
<p class="irregualrHeader"><strong>Handling</strong></p>
<p class="irregualrHeader">For me this is one of the most conflicting areas for this lens. On one hand Pentax has included some very nice design features that make this lens a worthy step up from the kit lens. On the other hand, the sheer bulk of this lens really gets in the way. Here are a couple of the nicer design features:</p>

<p class="irregualrHeader">The access port on the lens hood is a nice touch common to all Pentax lenses. It allows access to the control ring on rotating filters without removing the lens hood (like polarized, graduated and special effects filters). This is a very user-friendly feature that all lens makers should adopt. After all, you usually find yourself needing to use these types of filters <em>and</em> the lens hood at the same time anyway, right?</p>
<p class="irregualrHeader"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-354" title="SDM focus switch" src="http://booleansplit.com/wp-content/uploads/dsc_6685.jpg" alt="SDM focus switch" width="640" height="425" /></p>
<p class="irregualrHeader">Another nice feature of this lens is the SDM ultrasonic focus system. This lens focuses absolutely silently. This can be a bit strange at first considering how loud the screw drive focus system is with standard lenses. It&#8217;s not noticeably faster or more accurate than the screw drive system (still hunts too much IMO) but its silent operation draws less attention to the fact that you are taking pictures (if only the extra-loud shutter wouldn&#8217;t betray us so). The focus ring can be used anytime to fine tune the focus. However, it is not directly coupled to the focus mechanism so it does not stop turning when you reach the either end of the focus range. Pentax has included an AF/MF selector switch on the lens for those times when you want full time manual control. This is a lot easier to use than the switch on the camera body and is a nice touch.</p>

<p class="irregualrHeader">Why does Pentax make me spend $700 to get a decent center pinch lens cap?</p>
<p class="irregualrHeader"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-356" title="16-50 DA*, 18-55 DA &amp; 50 mm f/1.7 all @ 50mm" src="http://booleansplit.com/wp-content/uploads/dsc_6684.jpg" alt="16-50 DA*, 18-55 DA &amp; 50 mm f/1.7 all @ 50mm" width="640" height="425" /></p>
<p class="irregualrHeader">Now for the bad news. This lens is a<strong> brick</strong>. On my kitchen scale the 16-50 weighs 20oz while the 18-55 kit lens weighs in at 8oz and my old 50mm f/1.7 is only 5 3/4oz. (BTW, the K10D body w/ battery weighs 28oz). I realize that there is a weight penalty to step up to f/2.8 in a zoom but, considering this lens&#8217; lackluster performance <em>at</em> f/2.8, I really have to question the benefit here. I mean, why carry around all this glass if you&#8217;re going to be shooting at f/4 anyway?</p>
<p class="irregualrHeader">Mounting this lens to the front of my K10D felt very awkward. The grip on the K10D is a bit shallow and hanging all that weight off the front of the camera made it very difficult to hold securely with one hand. I found myself carrying the camera by the lens and having to use two hands for most of my shots. (Adding a battery grip would help balance the camera and provide better leverage with the heel of your right hand). Don&#8217;t get me wrong. I don&#8217;t mind a heavy and expensive lens if the performance and application justifies it. (Canon&#8217;s <a title="B&amp;H Photo product page" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/234444-USA/Canon_7042A002_70_200mm_f_2_8L_IS_USM.html" target="_blank">EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM</a> is one of my all time favorites). Overall this did not prove to be a very good walking around combination. I find this interesting since this sort of everyday use seems to be the main focus of lenses in this zoom range.</p>
<p class="irregualrHeader"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-358" title="Pentax K10D with 16-50 f/2.8 DA*" src="http://booleansplit.com/wp-content/uploads/dsc_6676.jpg" alt="Pentax K10D with 16-50 f/2.8 DA*" width="640" height="425" /></p>
<p class="irregualrHeader">Another negative aspect the comparison photo in the section above illustrates is how long this lens is. The 16-50 is at its longest (5 3/8&#8243; to the mount) at 50mm and its shortest (4&#8243;) at 16mm (as shown directly above with lens hood). The kit lens is only 3 1/8&#8243; at its longest which is at 55mm <em>and</em> 18mm. As you zoom from 18mm to 55mm the kit lens starts off long then retracts to its shortest length of 2 3/4&#8243; at 35mm then back out to 3 1/8&#8243; at 55mm. This double action means it only has to extend <em>half</em> as much (percentage wise) as the 16-50 does throughout its zoom range. I point this out mainly because 50mm on a 1.5X APS-C sensor is the equivalent of 75mm on a full frame sensor and 35mm film. This puts it right in the sweet spot for close portrait photography. However, when you point this thing at people they tend to back away as if you&#8217;ve just aimed a <em>bazooka</em> at them. I imagine it would be fine in studio situations but for candids and street photography the kit lens (or better yet, a 50mm prime) is clearly the better choice.</p>
<p class="irregualrHeader"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-357" title="16-50 DA* vs 18-55 DA" src="http://booleansplit.com/wp-content/uploads/dsc_6698.jpg" alt="16-50 DA* vs 18-55 DA" width="640" height="425" /></p>
<p class="irregualrHeader">Not to belabor the point too much here, but another aspect that should be considered with respect to lens size is how much space it takes up in your bag. Here you can see the 16-50 f/2.8 DA* and kit lens both suited up for travel with hoods and caps. As you can see, the 16-50 will require a pretty massive hole in your bag (4 1/8&#8243; X 4 7/8&#8243;). If you are anything like me you have to consider very carefully what goes in your camera bag. Which brings me to my conclusion&#8230;</p>
<p class="irregualrHeader">The advertised advantages of this lens are its wide FoV (16mm), speed (f/2.8), SDM focus motor, build quality, 9 bladed aperture, weather sealing, and sharpness. However, in actual use I don&#8217;t find any of these things in combination to be a significant enough improvement over than the kit lens as to justify the price and bulk of the 16-50 f/2.8 DA*. In fact, if this <em>were</em> the kit lens I would be looking to upgrade. If you have $700 burning a hole in your pocket there are a number of better choices out there.</p>
<p class="irregualrHeader">I suggest you look at the Pentax <a title="B&amp;H Photo product page" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/399853-USA/Pentax_21577_SMCP_DA_12_24mm_f_4_ED.html" target="_blank">SMCP-DA 12-24mm f/4 ED AL (IF)</a> ($670). It is a re-badge of the stellar <a title="B&amp;H Photo product page" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/360349-REG/Tokina_ATX124AFPROC_12_24mm_f_4_AT_X_124AF.html" target="_blank">Tokina 12-24mm f/4 AT-X 124AF Pro DX</a> ($490) and makes a much more useful ultra-wide angle addition to the kit lens. (It is a bit frustrating that we Pentax users have to pay an extra $200 for the same lens the Canikon folks can get directly from Tokina). It is still pretty heavy (15oz) and will take up just as much room in your bag as the 16-50, but the ultra-wide angle shots you&#8217;ll get with this lens will absolutely blow you away. If speed and sharpness are what you are looking for pick up a fast prime or two like the Pentax <a title="B&amp;H Photo product page" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/40755-USA/Pentax_20817_Normal_SMCP_FA_50mm_f_1_4.html" target="_blank">SMCP-FA 50mm f/1.4</a> ($200) and/or the Pentax <a title="B&amp;H Photo product page" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/542127-USA/Pentax_21730_SMCP_DA_35mm_f_2_8_Macro.html" target="_blank">SMCP-DA 35mm f/2.8 Macro Limited</a> ($480). If you really feel a burning need to try out a DA* lens, check out the new Pentax <a title="B&amp;H Photo product page" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/542149-USA/Pentax_21700_SMCP_DA_200mm_f_2_8_ED.html" target="_blank">SMCP-DA* 200mm f/2.8 ED (IF) SDM</a> ($890). Its bulk is easily justified by its extra reach and speed (just beware of some nasty purple fringing in high contrast scenes).</p>
<p class="irregualrHeader">Finally, if you are buying a new Pentax body and are looking for an upgraded alternative to the kit lens, don&#8217;t. The kit lens is one of the best values available for these cameras. If you are determined, take a look at Sigma&#8217;s <a title="B&amp;H Photo product page" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/463426-REG/Sigma_581109_18_50mm_f_2_8_EX_DC.html" target="_blank">18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC Macro</a> ($420). This was the lens I originally bought with my first K10D back in &#8216;07. It is not nearly as big and heavy as the Pentax 16-50 f/2.8, has almost identical image quality, and adds a very useful macro focus capability across the entire zoom range. I shot several thousand shots with it in 2007 in several parts of the world and can attest to its quality. That being said, I now know that the Pentax 18-55mm kit lens makes better pictures ;-)</p>

<p class="irregualrHeader"><strong>UPDATE:</strong></p>
<p class="irregualrHeader">A number of readers have suggested that Pentax&#8217;s $380 <a title="B&amp;H Photo product page" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/315380-USA/Pentax_21507_SMCP_DA_16_45mm_f_4_0_ED.html" target="_blank">SMCP-DA 16-45mm f/4.0 ED AL</a> might be a better upgrade choice over the 16-50mm f/2.8 DA*. I have no experience with this lens so I did not mention it as an alternative. Reading over the <a title="photozone.de review" href="http://www.photozone.de/Reviews/Pentax%20Lens%20Tests/134-pentax-smc-da-16-45mm-f4-ed-al-review--test-report" target="_blank">photozone.de test report</a> I can see that at only 12.9oz it is considerably lighter than the 16-50 DA*. Size wise it is slightly smaller than the 16-50 DA* with the added benefit of being at its <em>shortest</em> at 45mm (opposite of the 16-50). Also, it features an 8 bladed diaphragm which should result in decent bokeh and nice starbursts when stopped down. Resolution seems to be very good with distortion and vignetting similar to the 16-50 DA*. The only real noteworthy negative mentioned is heavy CAs at the edges of wide angle shots. If I can get my hands on one of these I will definitely post a similar review and find out if this lens is worthy of consideration.</p>
<p class="irregualrHeader"><em>After writing this review it was brought to my attention that the 16-50mm f/2.8 DA* has suffered from some quality control issues. It is entirely possible that this example is flawed. However, in researching this a bit more I still find a number of reviews pointing to similar image quality problems on lenses that are supposedly in proper working order. Potential QC problems aside, my opinion remains unchanged about this lens.</em></p>

<p>I got this idea from my <a title="MyArtistSoul Flickr page" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/24841945@N03/" target="_blank">Flickr friend Jim</a>. I&#8217;ve played with this idea in the past but didn&#8217;t have the right combination of lenses to really make it work. Seems the kit lens on my Pentax K10D and my 20 year old Pentax-A 50mm f/1.7 make a pretty super duper super macro lens.</p>
<p>The trick is to shoot <em>through</em> a second lens, thus dramatically shortening the minimum focus distance of the combined lenses. This works best with a medium focal length primary lens (attached to the camera) and a fast secondary lens held (typically backwards) in front of the primary lens.</p>

<p>In this case, the 49mm diameter front element on the 50mm fits perfectly inside the 52mm diameter of the 18-55mm Pentax kit lens. I found that I had to zoom the kit lens all the way out to 55mm to eliminate vignetting. I tried reversing the set-up but the 18-55&#8217;s  smaller maximum aperture resulted in vignetting at all focal lengths (hence the need for a fast secondary lens). For the shot above I simply switched the camera into manual focus, dialed in a handful of positive exposure compensation and got up close on a bulb on our Christmas tree:</p>

<p>Depth of field is essentially non-existent- as is typically the case with all macro lenses. Changing the focus of ether lens had very little effect on the focal distance to the subject. To achieve focus you have to simply move the camera back and forth while composing through the viewfinder. The problem is that with such a micro thin slice of DOF <em>any</em> movement will throw off your composition. I ended up dialing up the ISO to 800 so that I could get a decently fast shutter speed (around 1/100 sec) and taking a bunch of hand held shots to get a couple of winners. Use of a tripod would have certainly helped, though holding the secondary lens in position while composing the shot on a tripod might be tricky.</p>

<p>My understanding is that you can get similar results by simply reverse mounting certain types of lenses. There are <a title="Amazon.com link" href="http://www.amazon.com/Reverse-Mount-Adapter-Canon-Rebel/dp/B001G4PA36/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&amp;s=electronics&amp;qid=1229533315&amp;sr=8-6" target="_blank">accessories available</a> to do this. Also, I think you may be able to use a threaded step-up adapter ring to attach the two lenses like in my set-up. The $20 screw-on close-up lens adapters (the kind that look like filters) IMO are pretty worthless unless you buy <a title="Amazon.com link" href="http://www.amazon.com/Canon-500D-77mm-Close-Lens/dp/B00009XVDB/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=electronics&amp;qid=1229533701&amp;sr=1-1" target="_blank">very nice quality ones</a> but you might as well put that cash towards a dedicated macro lens.</p>
<p>The most popular macro accessories (besides a dedicated macro lens, of course) are <a title="Amazon.com link" href="http://www.amazon.com/Pentax-Auto-Extension-Tube-Set/dp/B00009UTDH/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&amp;s=electronics&amp;qid=1229533840&amp;sr=1-2" target="_blank">extension tubes</a>. Again, the price of entry here comes close to a decent dedicated macro lens (or zoom lens with macro capibility). There are cheaper alternatives and quality is less important if you are OK with losing auto focus and communication with your lens. I got some <a title="Flickr photos" href="http://www.flickr.com/search/?w=10687935%40N04&amp;q=extension+tube&amp;m=text" target="_blank">very nice results</a> with my old Canon 5D and 85mm f/1.8 + 12mm Canon extension tube:</p>

<p>Keep in mind that all of these options will limit your focus distance to macro applications. A dedicated macro lens typically will be able to focus to infinity, making it usable as a regular lens in addition to a macro. However, if you have a couple of the right kind of lenses laying around and you want to take some close-up shots, now you know how. Thanks, Jim!</p>

<p>It also occurred to me that one of the reasons my set-up works so well is that my old manual focus 50mm lens has an aperture ring. This means I can crank it open to <em>f</em>/1.7 to get a clear shot through. More modern lenses often lack an aperture ring and default to the smallest aperture when removed from the camera body. If this happens to you, look for the aperture lever on the inside face of the lens and try sliding the aperture open to get a clear view through your secondary lens.</p>

<p>Sometimes cool pictures just come from thinking outside the box a bit. Here I was sitting in front of the Christmas tree contemplating what kind of unique Christmas tree bokeh photo I could take when I thought of my <a title="Pocket Camera Bokeh Tutorial" href="http://www.booleansplit.com/?p=98" target="_blank">recent experience</a> capturing bokeh with my pocket camera. I got to thinking that my 50mm <em>f</em>/1.7 lens might make a good subject for a shot, rather than simply the tool for capturing them.</p>
<p>The set-up for this shot was pretty simple. I placed my Pentax K10D DSLR with the 50 attached on the coffee table in front of the Christmas tree. Next, I set my Panasonic Lumix FX07 on the table in front of the K10D and framed up the shot. I wasn&#8217;t happy with the vertical angle so I placed a quarter under the front edge of the bottom of the Lumix to prop it up a bit.</p>

<p>As you may be able to see, I also dialed in -2/3EV in exposure compensation. I&#8217;ll save it for another post, but understanding and properly using exposure compensation is one of the most important steps to good photography. Anyway, at this point all that was left was to do was fire, download, crop, and post.</p>
<p>In my opinion, the photo turned out pretty nice. I may try and re-shoot it with my K10D and 18-55 kit lens (with the 50mm not attached to the camera). If I do I&#8217;ll post the result here.</p>
<p><strong>UPDATE:</strong></p>
<p>Re-shoot with the K10D and <a href="http://www.booleansplit.com/?p=637" target="_self">processed through Lightroom</a>. This was one of those shots where when you see the image for the first time you say &#8220;whoa&#8221;. Pretty cool stuff!</p>

<p>Yesterday I posted a <a title="DSLR Bokeh Tutorial" href="http://www.booleansplit.com/?p=39" target="_blank">tutorial on photographing bokeh with a DSLR</a>. Today I am going to attempt to do the same about pocket cameras. Please take a minute to read over the first part of my DSLR Bokeh Tutorial to familiarize yourself with the basic concepts of what bokeh is and how it is typically created. The photo above (taken with my Pentax K10D &amp; 50mm f/1.7 SMC-A lens) is the closest most people think you can get to photographing bokeh with a compact pocket camera ;-)</p>
<p>The truth is you can shoot bokeh with a pocket or &#8220;push here dummy&#8221; (PhD) camera, but there are a few things you need to understand about the way they work first so you can set the camera up and compose your shot properly. The two biggest hurdles for getting good bokeh shots on the typical pocket camera are the extremely small objective lens (and resulting small aperture) and the auto focus system. <em>At this point I should mention that there are &#8220;pocket&#8221; cameras with manual controls. Users of these cameras will have to read both tutorials and combine steps and settings to find what works with their cameras.</em></p>

<p>The first rule of bokeh is the bigger and rounder the aperture opening, the bigger and rounder the bokeh. The photos above do a pretty good job of illustrating the challenge facing PhD camera bokeh seekers. Also, since we don&#8217;t typically have control over the aperture setting used by the PhD camera, we have to be sure the camera is set up to give us the desired results.</p>
<p>The second challenge to overcome is the PhD camera&#8217;s fully-automatic-do-everything-for-you mindset. If you recall from my DSLR tutorial, to get good bokeh you need:</p>
<ul>
<li>out of focus pin point light sources in the background</li>
<li>the largest possible aperture setting your lens will provide (<em>f</em> number)</li>
<li>a medium to long focal length (zoom in)</li>
<li>a short focal distance to the foreground subject</li>
<li>significant distance between the foreground subject and background points of light</li>
</ul>
<p>Trying to get all of this in combination at the same time can be very frustrating with a PhD camera. PhD cameras are typically programmed to produce photographs where everything is in focus and evenly exposed. To get decent bokeh out of your pocket camera you have to play a few tricks on it&#8217;s single-minded little silicon brain. I did a little playing around with the trusty little Panasonic Lumix FX07 above this afternoon to illustrate this tutorial.</p>
<p><strong>TUTORIAL:</strong></p>
<p>First, we need to set up the camera. Most PhD cameras come out of the box in full-on idiot mode. These &#8220;Auto&#8221; settings are great for taking snapshots but leave very little room for creative control. There is usually a &#8220;Manual&#8221; or other mode that allows greater control over the camera&#8217;s settings. I suggest that you use this mode for this exercise (and everything else). However, since there are so many PhD cameras out there (with each having its own user interface) I&#8217;m going to stick to settings that should be universally addressable. If you are unsure how to change any of these settings please refer to your camera&#8217;s user manual.</p>
<p><strong>Step 1: Turn off the flash</strong> (IMO you&#8217;ll be a better photographer if you never turn it back on).</p>

<p>The PhD camera is going to try and fire the flash to fill in all the darkness between your bokeh balls. Not very helpful.</p>
<p><strong>Step 2: Set the ISO to 200.</strong></p>

<p>By forcing the camera to use a relatively slow ISO speed we ensure that the PhD&#8217;s brain will dial up the largest aperture opening to try and compensate for the lack of light while keeping the shutter speed as fast as possible.</p>
<p><strong>Step 3: Turn on Image Stabilization</strong> (if available).</p>

<p>Image stabilization will help compensate for camera shake in what is bound to be a rather slow exposure. If you do not have IS you may have to play around with your ISO setting and/or use a tripod.</p>
<p><strong>Step 4: Select MACRO focus mode.</strong></p>

<p>Macro focus mode will enable us to dial in a very short focal distance to maximize depth of field.</p>
<p>Now that the camera is properly set up you need some nice pin point sources of light. Again, a Christmas tree on the far side of your living room makes an excellent subject this time of year. As we have not yet decorated our tree, some Christmas tree lights on the kitchen counter will have to do for this tutorial. Remember the Golden Rule of tutorials: &#8220;do as I say, not as I do&#8221; :D</p>
<p><strong>Step 5: Find some pin point sources of light in a relatively dark setting.</strong></p>

<p>My Lumix has a 3X zoom but the macro setting only works in the widest zoom position so these series of shots are at the widest zoom setting. If your camera can still focus in macro mode within about 6&#8243; of the front of the lens when zoomed out then try zooming out for this tutorial. Otherwise, just do what I did and play with the distance to the lights (I was only 4-5&#8242; away from this small section of lights- 10-12&#8242; is likely a better distance from a full-on Christmas tree).</p>
<p><strong>Step 6: Focus on something small up as close to the front of the camera lens as possible </strong>(half press and HOLD of the shutter button only-do not take the picture yet).</p>

<p>Here I&#8217;m using the stick from a Dum Dums lollipop. I like the sucker stick because it is small and white but its round shape provides enough highlight and shadow for the contrast detect auto focus to lock onto it. If you use your finger the camera will have difficulty focusing and the exposure will likely be blown out. Since PhD cameras lock exposure and focus at the same time, the trick here is to pre-focus on something very small in the foreground while not blocking too much light from the background and ruining the exposure of the bokeh.</p>
<p><strong>Step 7: Move the foreground object from in front of the camera and fully depress the shutter button to take the picture.</strong></p>

<p>Admittedly this has a lot to be desired as it has not reached the heights of bokeh-dom as are possible with a <a title="bokeh tree I" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/booleansplit/2097639225/in/set-72157603598429865/" target="_blank">DSLR and large aperture lens</a>. However, it <em>is</em> bokeh and it <em>was</em> shot with a PhD pocket camera. Adding a subject back into the foreground after pre-focusing on the small foreground object (using the LCD viewfinder to achieve focus by manually moving the camera and/or subject in front of the lens while continuing to hold the shutter button at the halfway point) can make for some pretty interesting bokeh shots that will impress your friends and neighbors (unlike this example).</p>

<p><strong>UPDATE:</strong></p>
<p>So, we finally got our tree up and I took the opportunity to try my technique out for reals. This is the best I could get with my Panasonic Lumix FX07:</p>

<p>Not bad, but I figured the limited macro capability of my Lumix might be holding things up a bit so I borrowed the wife&#8217;s 3 year old <a title="dpreview.com SD400 review" href="http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canonsd400/" target="_blank">Canon PowerShot SD400</a>. Canon PhDs tend to feature extremely close macro focus capability. Sure enough, the results this time around were really not half bad:</p>
